The Watan Jagirs of the Rajputs: Watan Jagirs were the persons who collected taxes from each village and gave them to mansabdars and mansabdars gave the taxes to the authority. The rulers of Amer and Jodhpur served as vassals under the Mughals, and they were awarded watan jagirs (regions or provinces) which they could rule independently.
The Rajput rulers had always enjoyed a certain freedom during the Mughal times, especially under the rule of Akbar .Akbar had realised early in his rule the importance of maintaining a cordial (friendly) relationship with the Rajputs .To conciliate them, some of the Rajput rulers were also made governors of provinces or jagirs.
Raja sawai Jai Singh of Amber was made the governor of Malwa .Jai singh later founder his new capital at jaipur. During the rule of Aurangzeb, the relationship between the Rajputs and the Mughals deteriorated. The Rajputs fought the Mughals to safeguard their jagirs and their homeland (watan).
When Jai Singh of Amber died ,Raja Jaswant Singh of Marwar (Jodhpur) was made the governor of Deccan .After the Death of Jaswant Singh in 1678 CE,the cordiality between Jodhpur and Aurangzeb also died .Aurangzeb dispatched an army which defeated and destroy the state, its towns and villages. To add to the troubles of Aurangzeb ,Raja Jai Singh of Mewar also revolted at the same time .Aurangzeb settled for peace with Mewar , but Marwar continued to trouble him.
Thus, Aurangzeb was forced to maintain troops near Rajasthan to safeguard the empire from the Rajputs -troops which could have been used to fight the Marathas .
Raja Ajit Singh of Marwar ( Jodhpur ) was made governor of Ajmer and Gujrat by the Sayyid brothers for supporting them in their fight with Muhammad Shah, the Mughal ruler .They also appointed Jai Singh II governor of Agra.
